Smiling Over Griffey Baseball Memorabilia |

Since I was about 14, my favorite piece of baseball memorabilia has been an encased card of Ken Griffey Jr. in his rookie year. He was the man to kids not only in the Seattle area like me but all over the country. After his Super Nintendo game came out everyone knew how extraordinary Mariners biggest home plate threat was. Now 39, he has returned to the Emerald City to close out his years in the MLB. The other night I was watching the 14-inning game the Mariners played against the White Sox in Seattle. Griffey had sat on the bench until the last second. Called up to pinch hit, he confidently walked to the plate while fans waved baseball memorabilia. Tied at zero in one of the longest MLB games Seattle has ever seen, Griffey knocked a solo shot out of the stadium for the win.

Fans went crazy, players rushed one of the league’s oldest and I was inspired to pull out that favorite piece of baseball memorabilia. Looking down at Griffey in his MLB infant years, a smile covered my face reflected off the thick plastic card cover. Now if I could only get it signed by the man himself before he hangs up his jersey.
